Kraftwerk

I loved Kraftwerk, the archetypal original German Electronic band. First came across them when Autobahn hit the charts back in 1975. All we got was the six-minute radio version. It wasn't until much later that I heard the full 22 minutes. Loved Trans-Europe Express, Man Machine and Computer World as well. Some of it still sounds fresh but some sounds a little low-tech now.

Fantastically innovative and influential all the same.

Sadly, I don't like Kraftwerk. I know I should, I love electronic music and I get how important it is to respect the innovators, but their sound just doesn't do it for me.

I bought Autobahn when it first appeared, and I liked some of their other stuff, though I find other things they've done to be very weak.

What really bothers me about Kraftwerk, though, is the myth that they `invented electronic music.' They didn't. It was going long before they ever got started. Ok, people can get their history wrong, especially if they're young enough not to have been around earlier. But Kraftwerk themselves have played up this myth and turned it to their own advantage and as far as I know they've never been honest about the fact that loads of people preceded them, loads of people appeared alongside them, and they're simply an electronic pop band that happened to get noticed.

I enjoy Kraftwerk but agree with sweep that they were not the first to produce this sort of music
