You'd better define your terms. I'm sure there have been a lot of people along the line who could have been regarded as "independent" -- Schoenberg and Ravel come to mind. And I forget his name, but there was at leat one "composer" a while back whose scores were such total gibberish that nobody else could make sense of them.
So what are you asking for?
