Importance of music videos for promotion

Hi there,
I'm doing some important research on how important the music video is as a promotional tool and would love to get your feedback.Do you believe that it is essential because it allows fans and a&r to relate to the bands even if it is just a cheap video of the musician/ bands playing, or do you believe there are better methods?
