That`s the Adagio in g minor, by Albinoni-Giazotti (or Albinoni-Giazotto; I`ve seen it referred to both ways.) Glorious stuff. Best known as the Albinoni Adagio.

That's why it's not listed in the Barlowe & Morgenstern index:
the Barlowe & Morgenstern index wasn't published in 1958!

"A Dictionary of Musical Themes" is a 500-page index of instrumental music themes.
"A Dictionary of Opera and Song Themes" is a comparably sized volume of vocal music themes.
To look up a melody which is going around through your mind and driving you crazy, transpose the song to C major or c minor. Then look in the alphabetical listing in the back, and it will direct you to the right page.

I bought the instrumental book at a rummage sale for 25 cents, but it fell apart.
Then I had to pay Amazon $100 for another copy.
I bought the vocal book at another rummage sale for $1.
I hope you have good luck finding both books.

On another forum, someone asked where we would go if we could time travel.
I replied that I would visit composers who are better known now than during their own lifetime.

First, I would bone up on my Italian and visit Vivaldi.
After being overshadowed by Albinoni during his own lifetime, he might be surprised to hear that Albinoni is now introduced to listeners as "a contemporary of Vivaldi," rather than vice-versa.
In fact, Albinoni's best-known composition isn't really by him!

Of course, I would have to learn Italian well enough to explain modern technology to Vivaldi.
Otherwise, he would not understand me when I tell him that his music is quoted on movies, TV commercials, and cell phones.

It`s a shame more folks don`t know other works by Albinoni; his oboe concertos are great!
