Horror films soundtrack

Danny Elfman did a bunch of scores for various horror-themed movies/series. Tales From the Crypt for one. I believe Scrooged could also be suitable.

Kudos to the music directors of such films, the music itself makes you jump out of your skin. I wouldn't classify "sixth sense" as a horror movie but music wise it had all the makings of being one. Music in itself can be so scary that I wouldn't dare to watch such movies all by myself.

Yeah, Psycho has the best musical score. Psycho and Halloween have wonderful soundtracks. I think all of the good horror flicks have good musical score. A horror movie with a lame horror film score will surely flop.

The halloween soundtracks really did do my nerves no good at all when I watched those movies years ago. Strangley the more up to date movies in the series didn't have the same effect even with the dramatic score. I wondered whether it was to do with the story being rehashed so many times it had become almost a joke rather than a horror that would send shivers down my spine?

I've loved Jerry Goldsmith's Psycho II and Giorgio Moroder's Cat People scores too.

Mh, you could also give a try to the Phenomena soundtrack, mainly composed by Claudio Simonetti. In the film, which was directed in 1985 by Italian director Dario Argento, co-starred Jennifer Connelly. One of the tracks, namely "Jennifer", is very beautiful. I think that, as far as the English-speaking Countries go, the film was released as Creepers. Anyway, the score was very nice (it also included a song performed by the Frankie Goes To Hollywood).

Even though I don't like horror movies I will on Halloween night I will
play some newage, heavy metal like Kiss,and some classical music
played on the organ. Don't forget Alice Cooper with He's back from
one of the friday the 13th movies. This year the pagan day falls on
the very night I go to church. I don't know what the church has in
store yet. I will keep you posted.

Didn't think it would take too long before someone mentioned Argento!
Many of the Goblin soundtracks for his films scared the living crap out of me. There was one (it may have been Creepers or Suspiria ... or even Deep Red, I think they did that one) which had a psychotic, raspy voice "la-la" ing whilst the female lead was wandering through his eerily lit, red/blue scenery. Brilliant.

I gotta recommend the soundtrack of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Good stuff.
Not alot of orchestral stuff in there though, just good moody music.

I like watching horror movies too but i don't have much fondness in their type of songs though they still sound good like what I heard in The Exorcist.
I seldom listen to these music, the last i heard them when we had this certain activity in film school that required to have this kind of music.

I really liked the soundtrack for "Needful Things". I haven't actually seen the movie, but the music by Patrick Doyle is excellent.

I personally love Fabio Frizzi's percussion driven score cue for the film ZOMBIE (1979) directed by Lucio Fulci. Of course, in my opinion, one of the most effective scores ever created for a horror film is John Carpenter's score for HALLOWEEN - very simple - but who can get that tune out of their head once you have heard it. The great Harry Manfredini has done so many great horror scores and yes Bernard Herrmann's score for PSYCHO is a masterpiece. I have also greatly enjoyed the arrangement Danny Elfman did for the remake of Psycho and also LOVE Danny Elfman's SLEEPY HOLLOW score.
