Hi ekpees,
I'm assuming your "hymn mastering" was done on a keyboard instrument. The same generalized technique for playing other classical music is much the same you used to play hymns.
I agree with Adino - practice, practice, practice. All during my years of formal organ study, I practiced at least 3 hours each day :crazy: . An amateur then - as a professional, I still practice "until I can't get it wrong."
BTW,
as a church organist for 47 years, I have yet to 'master' hymn playing :grin: - I'm always going to be learning something along the way. The day I stop learning, or stop practicing, is the day I donate my music library to the local university and throw my organ shoes into the garbage can , which isn't going to happen until my fingers and feet can no longer move !
