[I apologize in case my English is not good: it's not my mother tongue]

What do you think about the new 150 CDs Haydn Edition by Brilliant Classics?

Have you had the occasion to listen to (part of) it?

Is it worth buying? Why yes/no?

Which are the relevant Haydn works that are NOT included?

Hello, welcome to the forum. Your English is fine so don't worry. These cds I don't know, but do stay around as someone might be able to tell you.

Buy it - here's why...

(1) There's an enormous amount of wonderful music here. Apart from the symphonies, the sonatas played on the fortepiano, and most of the quartets, there are the entire set - yes, all 126 - baryton trios, some of which are as inspired as any of Haydn's music. And don't forget the Scottish songs, the concertos, and the eight-voice divertimentos, which boast some of Haydn's most difficult horn parts.
(2) The performances here previously released are all good or excellent. The new recordings should be too, as Brilliant have a pretty good record on quality (think of the Mozart edition).
(3) I have known and loved Haydn's music for over 40 years. I have hundreds of Haydn CDs, and I ordered this the moment I heard about it.
(4) It's cheap. I paid 125 GBP from CD Selections.

Thanks for reading!

So...I've bought the Haydn set, in the end! (before reading the answer(s) to my post).

In my opinion it's worth buying! :)

So far, I've listened to some symphonies, some concerts and some string quartets: I liked the performances very much.
I haven't listened to the baryton stuff yet: actually, I never heard about this instrument before!
And I don't know if I will ever listen to the songs etc. [I will, I will], but in my opinion the Haydn set is worth having even for the symphonies+string quartets+concertos *alone*.

Hi bwv1080,

I've long been appreciative of Haydn and his music. Having lodged (servants quarters) at the Esterhazy Palace some years ago, and having free roam of the grounds and interiors of the building, I can see where he got a lot of his inspiration from.

I too did not know of this CD set ... I'll have to check it out for sure.

Btw, welcome to this forum community - We hope you will enjoy your time here and look forward to seeing you about the boards.

High all.
It's Haydn year. Let's support the master. The greatest of all in my view.
I have heard on the yahoo Haydn group that this 150 cd set has one cd of the baryton trios missing so please bear that in mind. Apparently the baryton trios which I'm waiting for are coming out later this year.
