Inspectors have found that 100% of those admitted to a maternity unit on the Isle of Wight were female and have ordered it to raise the proportion of male admissions to at least 25% in the next two years.
The management of the East Cowes unit claimed that few men on the Isle chose to become pregnant and that the low number of male admissions was not in their control. However, the inspectors rejected this claim as irrelevant, adding that men were probably deterred by the thought of the reception they would get if they arrived at the unit claiming to be pregnant.
One prominent feminist campaigner said: Its about time women stopped accepting this discrimination. My lazy useless ex-husband expected me to bear all our children but my new husband Mary has not yet become pregnant and we may seek medical advice, though not from some hopeless backward-thinking male doctor.
