favourite period of time in music

Do you have a preference for music from a particular period in history? Or maybe more than one? Does most of the music you enjoy come from a specific era? Feel free to cite examples.

I enjoy music from all time periods, but I have to say, I seem to lean mostly towards music from the late Romantic and 20th century periods. Debussy and Ravel have written the music I enjoy the most, in particular. :)

My favorite composers are from the Romantic period. Paganini is THE violin GOD!! Not only are his 24 Caprices for violin the most difficult works ever written, they are also extremely beautiful!! I also LOVE Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Dvorak, Brahms and of course: Beethoven.

I also like some 20th Century composers, though, the majority of my favorites are from the Romantic era. Some 20th Century composers I like: Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Holst and Hovhanness.

Cyndee :)

Well, for Baroque they used emotion through chord progressions and scales. But for romanticism, they used dynamics, and Classicism, well is a bit of both in my opinion.

I think this question is interesting, but my thoughts on this are that if you look at the different musical periods--the more you look into present time, the more composers you encounter in each time period (especially of the well-known variety).

For example, if you think of the classical and Baroque periods, I think most people can only name about a half dozen composers combined. It seems logical to think that the more composers that you see in a given time period of music, the better the odds increase for preferring one time period over another. But I don’t think it’s that simple… I have the impression the romantic period is the most popular. Although I like certain composers from this era, I tend to like composers in the early 20th century the most. However, I think most people think in terms of liking composers more than specific 'time periods'. At least I can speak for myself.

Any thoughts?

To tell the truth, there is no favorite. Right now I'm really digging the Baroque period, most notably JS Bach. I'm also a huge fan of the Romantic through early 20th century.

I think generall before 1860 music hadn't really devoloped enough for someone now to really enjoy it. After 1960 things get atonal and to be honest, i don't like atonal. It dosn't hae the heard that tonal music has for me.

I'm an unashamed late romantic. If I could take just a 35 year period from 1893-1928, then that would cover over half the records in my collection I suspect. Particularly austro-bohemian and Scandinavian music (i'm half Swedish and my nearest neighbour across the water from Edinburgh is Denmark). It's also my favourite period in painting.

As an organist, I tend to lean towards the Baroque period as my personal preference, although some 20th century composers as Hindemith and Kerg-Elert are interesting enough to garner my interest. In particular, Camil van Hulse, who was a local artist here for many years, is another favorite of mine for church music.
