Rebekah Eden could have sung her music in the Renaissance Age, or in the neo-Romantic era of the 1800s, or in the 1920s-1930s, or in any fantasyland of long ago and far away, as they say. But she is here and now singing wonderful tales of fantasy and wonder on her latest album, Rowing in Eden.
Credentials? Oh, yes, she has credentials. Here she sings in English, but she has sung all over Europe for years doing opera, arias, classical, sacred music and age-old folk music in Latin, German, Italian and French. She has performed in castles and churches, sang several times at the annual World Angel Day Celebration, performed at the Vienna Easter Festival, sung with Dusseldorf Opera and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, got music degrees from top universities, traveled to the Czech Republic twice to hire and oversee an orchestra for her album, received special invitations to perform her music in Israel and Rio de Janeiro, put her music to the words of 12[SUP]th[/SUP] century Saint Hildegard of Bingen, and played electric guitar on tunes by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and AC/DC in teenage rock bands.
For her third album, Rowing in Eden, Rebekah turned to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia for inspiration and influence. The books were her initial influence, but this music could easily have been utilized on the soundtracks of the films made from those fantasy novels. She does one cover tune, “Ramble On” by hard-rock masters Led Zeppelin, because the lyrics mention The Lord of the Rings and that fits perfectly on this recording (but note that Eden does a soft version of this rocking classic). Musically the album features a lot of strings, some orchestral instruments, some pop-rock instrumentation, and a few Celtic touches, but in general is soft and gentle enough to fit into the spectrum of the modern wide-open genre known as new age music.
