Does your town or city do crazy things during the holidays or any other
celebration? Just last saturday three days after christmas and New Years
on the way they finally had a christmas parade and it was a real short
one! Where I live I could watch it from my back door and I laughed
till I cried. Let me know about your experiences simular to mine.

Our city had a Christmas parade downtown ... traffic congestion is always present, but when they blocked up two main thoroughfares for the parade, it gets real loony trying to move about that area.

As luck would have it, we had theater tickets for the same night to see "The Pajama Game" which let out right as the parade was starting. The parade was wonderful - albeit everything being pulled with souped up gas guzzling trucks at a time when we are supposed to be conserving fuel ... lol.

Of course, being as election time is nearing, all the politicians were out in full force waving, smiling, trying to garner votes instead of celebrating a national holiday.

Judy - was the parade so bad it made you laugh 'til you cried or were your overjoyed with it all ?

The parade was pityful! That's my hometown for you. They call this place
the best town on earth and I kinda laugh at the sign. Only in madisonville
do they build a shopping mall next door to a sewage plant! It get kinda
hard to eat at Godfathers there. The mall can smell really funky!
No wonder this place can't keep a decant business going. This is supposed
to be the best town on Earth! Yeah right!

Every year in November our church organises a Christmas Song Fest. It is non denominational with all Christian churches partisipating, the service and singing is held in three different languages (English, Afrikaans and Sesotho). One of the high lights is the massed choir, consisting of the choir members from all churches in town. The massed choir is so large that they spill over from the organ/choir loft, filling all the isles and the front of the church. It is awesome hearing the siging from all sides and actually sitting between the choir. The song fest has become so popular that for the last two years they had to arrange two "shows" to accommodate every one (the church can only take 650 people at a time). After the service a collection is held to buy food for the needy, last year more than 400 food parcels were distributed by the Christian community. The best part of all is the way the town has been united by this one yearly event. Even the churches started working together throughout the year.

Hi jvhldb,

What a wonderful way to help unite people together in this day of so much unrest in the world. What a thrilling experience for the organist/accompanist, too - and to hear it in some native languages, too.

How many people comprise the mass choir?

I'm not sure how many we had this December, last year there were about 60 choir members (our normal church choir consist of 12 members).
