DAVID FRANKLIN
PLAYING WITH SHADOWS
CD REVIEW
Multi-instrumentalist David Franklin works in small delicate musical settings -- solos, duos and trios -- on his new recording, PLAYING WITH SHADOWS. The 18 instrumental tunes on this terrific album include seven solo piano tunes by Franklin, but also two acoustic-guitar and bass duos with Franklin on guitar and the renowned Michael Manring on bass. They also add four piano-bass duos. Then Franklin doubles-up and overdubs piano and guitar backed by Manring for three trio numbers. There also are two other trio pieces featuring acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass; and piano, accordian and percussion.
It all works to form a wonderful tapestry of sound, mostly acoustic except for Manrings electric fretless bass and that one electric guitar. Take a listen to this lovely and diverse album (find some samples on the Internet) and see if you dont agree that this music has a lot to offer. It is kind of moody, but in a good way -- great for late-night listening when you are in a thinking mood, pondering the great mysteries of life, wondering about the universal laws of the cosmos, or simply having one more beer to help you sleep.
