Dark somber classical pieces

I am making a CD for my dark mood days. There are 2 CD's - one for war related dark music (can be powerful) and one for poignant pieces. The music is not necessarily limited to classical but I need some input on dark classical pieces.

For example, right now, I have on the war CD
Peer Gynt. Suite No. 1, Op,46: The Death Of Ase
Dvorak Symphony 9-2 - optional
Beethoven Funeral March
Finlandia
Götterdämmerung: Siegfried's Death & Funeral March

I also have 3 or 4 selections from K-19 The Widowmaker, the theme from Schindler's List, December 7th from Pearl Harbor.

Suggestions please and could you also note why you suggested a particular piece?

Thanks.

Shostakovich - 5th Symphony, 3rd Movement
Shostakovich - 13th Symphony "Babi Yar", most of the piece.
Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 13 (single movement work)

They're dark and delve into the imprisonment of human souls. These pieces destroy me.

Shosty's 5th destroys me as well. I can only bear listening to it on rare occasions. The intensity is just too much for me. Love the work.

I have an idea try some bach or war of the worlds with jeff wayne. How
about 1812 overture? When the japanise bombed pearl harbor the radios
everywhere was playing beethoven's 5th symphony. Before you try any
thing like you want read up on some history about wars and the popular
music of the time.

I did not know that about Pearl Harbor Judy. I thought of the 1812 overture but it is just slightly long for that one CD but with the suggestions from all, may end up with 3 CD's - wonder if I can claim I need extra mental health days to listen to the CD's.

I have little of Shostakovich - maybe two pieces - Festive Overture, Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in B Minor. I am a novice in classical music but generally enjoy most I hear with some exceptions but then again I enjoy most music except for rap, hip-hop and heavy heavy metal. A friend gave me a lot of his mom's tapes/CDs of classical music ( she was a lifelong collector) so I am betting I have some of the pieces suggested. Thanks to each for your input. When I finally decide the CD is done, may post the listing and see what you think of the final product.

War themes? Mars, the Bringer of War from Holst' Planets comes to mind. The music says it all. If you want a direct contrast after that, then Venus bringer of peace, I think it's called or something like that. It's VERY peaceful.:.)

My choice for somber themes would be rather diverse:
Girolamo Frescobaldi: Toccata per L'Elevazzione (From Fiori Musicali)
Claudio Monteverdi: Lamento d'Adrianna (Madrigal)
John Dowland: Lacrimae or Seven Teares
Cesar Franck: Choral No.2 (so deep)
Tchaicowsky: From Children's Ablum, Op.39 No.12: (Something about a broken or ill doll very easy piece but dramaticaly somber)
Robert Schumann: Symphony No.2, Movement No.3: Adagio expressivo
Frederic Chopin: Sonata No.2, 3rd. Movement: Marche Funebre, Lento
Morton Feldman: Rothko Chapel
Angelo Badalamenti: Score from L'Adversaire
And much more!
cheers
