i have alot of problems capturing melodies ill try to write something and it all gets jumbled in my head, or nothing seem firm enough for me. does anyone else have this problem? what are some ways to get out of the ruts?

I use a digital recorder when I am improvising at the piano or organ ... that way, I have a permanent record of the tune and can further develop it later on.
I also use visual aids ... for me, looking at a grand stained glass window draws inspiration - there are dozens of theme ideas running through my noggin all the time ... I always have the recorder going when I am composing a new thought or idea.
