Hailing from New York, CALLOOH CALLAY are a quintet whose debut album ‘Astounding Flow Of Time’ was unleashed in February 2019. As starting point, I will cut to the question you may have - how does this offer stack up? Wonderfully! Sophisticated both in construction and execution, often unpredictable, the music runs the wide gamut of flavors, and the whole record stands as a benchmark of quality where the melody is always paramount. The group consists of Adam Colombo (main songwriter, lead singing and guitar), Giancarlo Pepe (keyboard arsenal, b/vox), Todd Cogan (lead guitar, b/vox), Rich Pizzo (bass, b/vox), Jimmy Lohrius (drums & percussion). The first official release has given them an opportunity to present 10 original pieces showcasing the peculiar textures with multiple changes. The ambitious, memorable stuff can be described like a sonic travelogue that amalgamates symphonic prog along with the vibes of classic rock, while many segments are featuring distinctive ‘jam’ style. Sure, to name the particular influences is a mandatory inclusion, however it’s quite evident Callooh Callay are searching their own way. The melodic appeal and type of arrangements may sound familiar to listeners even albeit they’re clearly original. In terms of structures and vocal overdubs, there are some Unitopia references, but the keyword is 'some'. You can also notice the touches of Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings scattered here and there, however these are just influences which mean Callooh Callay decided to pick and alter the specific ingredients. At times, the musical phrasings pay reverence to aesthetics of the glorious 70's/ 80's era. There's always something going on that demands your attention, as each individual composition is different from the next. The progressive rock mosaic abounds with adventurous changes, exhilarating twists and turns, singular hooks, amazing guitar / keyboard interplay augmented by captivating rhythmic backdrop, excellent lead vocals and multi-part harmonies. Callooh Callay do have the scope and depth of work delivered by the masterful performance. From beginning to end, this is a real pleasure to become engrossed in the spectacular album that avoids clichés. There are no inadequacies on this outrageously impressive item. Though it's best to enjoy the material as a whole, there are several songs I am especially fond of: ‘The Evil Cocoon’, ‘Treehouse’, ‘Victory’, ‘Packed Away Dolls’ and ‘The Dream Chant’ (the longest track of the set). It could be purely my opinion, and I assume other folks will find their own favorite moments... Either way, we have the top notch work.
So I heartily recommend you support one of the emerging talents on American progressive scene in their endeavors by buying the CD 'Astounding Flow Of Time’.

The line-up has changed somewhat from the debut album, with Lou Fischetti coming on lead guitar instead of Todd Cogan, while Rob Epstein is now responsible for the keyboard department instead of GianCarlo Pepe. What should be said about the next release? A set of 10 compositions is coming along quite well.
