I see my home town orchestra is making a long awaited return to London, 15 years since they played there last. This time with the wonderful Ashkenazy at the helm (their music director) and a fabulous French pianist ... oh to be in the Albert Hall in August ... sigh.

Ah yes, The Proms is still high on my bucket list. Nice to see the SSO back there after so long a time.

Matt and Monte, I must say that I don't know the symphony of Scriabin they're playing (I only know the exquisite Poem of Extasy, of course). I also note that Scriabin's must is all available on IMSLP ... nice.

Scriabin symphony 3 would have to be my favourite after Prometheus. I've tried playing some of Scriabin's piano sonatas from IMSLP (3 and 6), but they're very hard to play, and require time which I don't have to master.

Montefalco - there are scores of Scriabin preludes, some of them playable, some of them murderously difficult ... I agree. I also saw one that I've downloaded that looks moderately playable, and would work beautifully on the organ. I must try it.

We used to get very good TV coverage of the proms but none at all now,.
Mike, what other perks do pensioners in the UK get???? my sister in law gets free overseas calls I suppose she is limited to so many/month?

It's going to be broadcast here by our national broadcaster (not live obviously), thank goodness.

Watching the proms. in particular the last night used to be a regular event for me. I remember Sir Malcolm Sargent with great fondness. A very humane and humorus man. I never seem to have the time or oportunity these days. Roll on retirement.

No David, but it is a two to three hour round trip just to get to maidstone. I live on the end of the world here, about two hundred yardsfrom the sea.
