Yesterday I spent a few hours with friends on Brownsea Island mainly watching & photographing wildlife we covered maybe 2 or 3 miles in our wanderings over about 4 or 5 hours in between the wandering mostly standing. OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH me legs

Today is being spent in sedentary or supine modes with minimum standing or staggering - walking is definitely out!

Red squirrels were busy gathering nuts for their winter stores, this one was raiding the bird feeders for peanuts, the chaffinch was probably not amused! The red admiral butterfly was a bit late in the season. The Avocet was one of many paddling in the lagoon, looked to cold for my liking. Last week there was a flock of over 350 there.

We've got grey (and sometimes black) squirrels around here stocking up for winter as well. I wonder if they find all the stuff they bury come springtime.

Lovely pictures Mike. We have grey squirrels visit the garden, but no reds around here.

The Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island are the only places in Southern England with reds in the wild, there are some captive ones at the British Wildlife centre near Lingfield, Surrey on the A22; They are more numerous in the north of England and in Scotland, in most other areas they have been overwhelmed by the grey squirrel; there have been a few projects to control greys, for example Isle of Anglesey (N Wales) where reds have made a comeback, and at a reserve in Merseyside.

Enjoyed the photos. I too love to go hiking through the woods here and checking out the wildlife. Amazing what you see at different times of the year.
