A chat about Cd reviews?

Hello all:
I am trying to understand the protocol as well as your community culture concerning reviews (cds, dvds, books, etc). I have read the Magle guidelines and, yet, the only review featured on this forum does not seem to comply fully (such as a complete listing of the product). More importantly, why is there only one review? Is it something worth pursuing here, even if it is rather amateurish, or is the community more interested in formal reviews, by expert musicologist and critiques, in well known journals? In my opinion, it's another way of sharing insights, reactions, opinions.

I believe it would be the consensus of the forum that we would welcome both amateur and professional reviews of CD's in that particular forum, as long as the general forum rules (concering spam, advertising and such) are honored.

Now, speaking with my Regulator hat removed: :tiphat: The CD Review guidlines are what the forum would like to see - some posters may not be as well versed in giving such reviews in eloquent terms as another. If the review is interesting enough to the forum in general, then the poster has made a great contribution for others to read about.

Thank you, Lars. The standards articulated by the owner of this wonderful site are admitedly higher than what I had envisioned with my prior comment about customer reaction. I don't know that I have the credentials; I certainly do not have the professional training. However, I can appreciate the fact that legal issues could arise from a not so constructive, poorly informed, and completely incompetent review. I dearly hope that you and other well informed musicians or composers will volunteer for the review board, alongside Todd. To the reader, a review involves an element of trust. I read reviews in a variety of media but I do not trust all the reviewers. Some are prone to hyperbole; others will underestimate a whole performance because of coughing noises in the audience or God knows what arbitrary reason! I think that trust is achieved when one can discern a sincere effort on the part of the reviewer to look at a performance constructively and, at the same time, to indicate, if necessary, where the listener could experience less than satisfaction. Let's hope that you, rojo, or other veterans of this board will volunteer a few reviews which I know will be useful to all.

Does that mean that reviews from any member are welcome so long as they fall within the guidelines?

I'd love to submit a few reviews, though I do fear that my impartiality may be called in to question when I give every Clapton album full marks every time On a more serious note, I'd be interested to hear whether the likes of myself would be able to submit reviews. I'm a keen writer and love music, so what better way to whittle away half an hour than to review one of the many additions to my CD collection.

There are really two different subject matter at hand here. I'll try to clarify the two, although they are somewhat similar:

1) Post your own review. See this page for information.

2) Read about becoming a MIMF Reviewer here . If you (or any other member) is interested in doing this, please PM Frederik Magle directly.

Thank you for clarifying things - I'd seen the page outlining the rules for "unofficial" reviews, though I hadn't seen the announcement by Frederik Magle advertising for reviewers hence my modest confusion.

I will write a review and ask Frederik to take a look - I'm sure he will be able to tell me whether I can write comprehensively and informatively enough to be an official reviewer, or whether I would be better off sticking to the general review forum.
