The art film “Woman in Red – Seahorse Aria” was premiered on the 25th October 2014 in the Kupina Cinema in Niš, Serbia (Reportage from the premiere), marking the culmination – thus far – of a collaboration between Frederik Magle and his sister, the artist Maria Dubin.
“Woman in Red – Seahorse Aria” is a short “silent” art film, directed by Maria Dubin, which uses Frederik Magle’s work for soprano and symphony orchestra, “Seahorse Aria”, as its soundtrack. It is filmed on a former military base in Nis and stars Jovana Parlic as the “Woman in red”, as well as the symphony orchestra of the University of Niš (Orkestar Fakulteta umetnosti, Niš) and soprano soloist Matilde Wallevik, conducted by Milena Injac.
A gallery from the filming can be found at the University of Nis: Faculty of Arts website.
Frederik Magle composed the music after several visits to Serbia, and it was recorded in the spring 2014 prior to the filming. The film was edited to the recorded music.
